The attack happened at around 8.15pm on Sunday when he was leaving his home.
He was walking to his car at a bus stop near the intersection of Mabarong Street and Tamekela Street when a man approached him, punched him and tried to push him away.
The man told him he was “in no condition to drive”.
He said he had been punched in the face and a black eye and was left with a black and red rash.
The suspect was last seen running west on Tamekawa Street.
Police said they were investigating the incident as an attempted robbery.
A spokesperson for the Northern Territory Police Service said they had launched an investigation.

A witness told 7.30 the suspect was wearing a mask and was “brave” in his attack.
